What is RSS?

RSS is a way to monitor web sites through a "feed" that automatically sends a person notifications when web sites have been updated. To use RSS, you need a software program called an RSS feed reader that gathers and displays feed content. The library catalog has a built-in RSS feed reader so that patrons may look at feed updates from a variety of government and public policy oriented sites.

There is no agreement on what RSS stands for, some call it "Really Simple Syndication" or "Rich Site Summary" or the light-hearted definition "Ready for Some Stories." The advantage of RSS is that it allows people to automatically monitor multiple sites without spending a lot of time surfing or receiving numerous email notices.
